They finally came out with the non resistance top for the Sili Squeeze as well. Just had to share. I am exited about the possibilities! Check it out here
You are welcome :)
Rebecca thank you for this. What a great idea.
We bought one of the sili-squeeze's and have really loved it for smooth purees. I have attached a ribbon to it so my daughter can't ditch it when we are walking. I am looking forward to them releasing the non-resistant top so I can put my own chunkier purees and things like apple sauce ect....into it. They are worth looking into. I think they can come in handy just to transport things like peanut butter, sauces, oils (maybe) for cooking on backpacking trips. Nice to have something you can take home and wash/reuse and not feel bad for throwing it away when you are done with it.
We love those squeeze packs. We also like the Justin peanut butter, almond butter and other squeeze packs. I just found out about the book The Real Camping Cookbook. It is for families. It might have great tips.
We usually try to keep it simple on the trail.
Go Go Squeez has awesome easy to eat applesauce (usually keep away from packaged stuff, but these are great!)
Oh great tips!! Thanks!
Ford (my oldest) was my taste tester all those years :-D Well, he still is ;-) My brain is slow these days (I am 35 weeks pregnant with my 3rd) but if you can tell me what the kids like I can point you in the right direction!
Sarah over at Freezer Bag Cooking has some good recipes: http://www.trailcooking.com/ In her cookbook she talks specifically about some of her son's favorites. Like cheesy couscous, which is pretty much the backcountry equivalent of mac-n-cheese, but easy to make instant with just hot water. You can add freeze-dried corn or onions or spices or whatever your kid will go for. She recommends carrying a thermos of hot water, and then you can add it to a freezer bag of instant food for hot lunch on the trail. She's pretty creative about different ways to make healthy instant foods that are convenient but still just dried food.
I was skeptical in the beginning of things like instant taboulleh -- just add water and a little bit of olive oil to a mix of couscous, sun-dried tomatoes, dried peppermint and other spices. Stir and wait 20 minutes. It's amazingly easy and tasty and portable. And my kids like it.
I'm interested in some kid-friendly recipes too! For snacks we like string cheese, pepperoni and peanut butter w/ crackers.
