We love Hocking Hills too! We went this past spring and stayed at one of the state park cabins and had a great time. We're thinking of making it an annual spring weekend getaway! never been to stroud's run either, thanks for the heads up.

I camped at Hocking Hills years ago and loved the area.  Strouds looks nice too, will have to check that one out for sure.

These places are not in the direction of cinci but are really amazing and kind of close to you although you have probably already heard of them. The first is Hocking Hills which is a personal favorite of mine. http://www.hockinghills.com/camping.html . The second I haven't been to but my friends who go to OU rave about it and that is Stroud's Run  http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/strouds/tabid/790/Default.aspx

Susan, we are in Springfield, about an 1.5 hr drive from downtown cincy. We just recently returned from a camping trip at one of the Hamilton County Park Campgrounds- Winton Woods. It was only a little over an hour drive for us, and we were so impressed with the park and the campground- can't wait to go back!

We haven't been to the Cincinnati Nature Center recently (we actually used to live in Northern KY, so are very familiar with the area), but the few times we went I really liked it- the trails are so quiet, varied and well-maintained. The nature playscape sounds so cool!

Mohican state park is a bit of a farther drive for us- a little over 2hrs, so we have never been there, but sounds like we'll have to check it out someday! We are limited to short drives right now because of the intensity of my husband's work schedule, which is a bummer, but hopefully by next spring things will have slowed down a bit!

Hi Sugarloaf!  Not sure where in central Ohio you are but if you are somewhat close to the Cincinnati area, there is a place I would love to check out whenever I can take a weekend get-away (I live 5 hrs from Cincy b/c am near Cleveland!).  There is a brand new Nature Playscape that just opened in August and it looks pretty cool (see link for news article).

Nature Playscape

Also, the Cincy Nature Center is opening a Nature Based Preschool next year!  Oh, I really, really wish someone would do that up here near Cleveland!  Anyway, not sure if this interests you or how far you are from this area but looks kinda cool.

If you are closer to Columbus, have you checked out Mohican State Park?  They have lot's of canoeing and hiking around that area...really pretty.

And finally, your profile pic with your daughter in the backpack is cute!  My younger daughter has the very same little purple hat!  :)

Joining in on this group! We live in central OH and although I grew up here, it has been an adjustment finding more about all the local parks, trails and campgrounds here vs when we lived in KY and it seemed like they were coming out our ears! We are limited to traveling just an hr or so for right now, so finding those close to home gems are what we are all about!

Sorry it's taken awhile to get back with you Amy!  I work just 3 days per week and often that is when I have time to be on the computer.  Here are a few links to the places I like to spend with my family outdoors in Ohio.  The last one is for the Allgheny Forest in PA (great for backpacking and more remote car camping).  I do live very close to Lake Erie, I am in Euclid which is just about 25 mins north of Lyndhurst!  I am actually near that area at least once per week seeing friends, going to Horseshoe Lake, going to vet and doc appoitments in the Cleve. Hts. area.  Small world!  :)

Hey Susan!
We're in Great Falls now, but I spent 17 years in the Flathead so it was nice having the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Glacier National Park in the backyard. It's very different living on the prairie, but still gorgeous in its own way. We're hoping to spend some time in Glacier in August when we have to head that way for a wedding.

Are there any on-line resources for maps and such of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park or the state parks? I get so lost back there anymore. It's really sad. I'm looking forward to being back there at the end of October, though. The boys are going to go crazy with the leaves and huge trees. We don't have much for large trees over here let alone the spectacular color.

Are you close to Lake Erie? What do you do near Cleveland? My cousin is in Lyndhurst, and goes to my uncle's in southern Ohio but I'm sure she would like to do more near home. (I'm going to see if I can get her to join OBN and this forum.) Well, I better keep at it. I'm a writer and most of my work happens between 10 and midnight. Thanks much!

Hi Amy!

I live just a little bit north in the Cleveland area.  Where may I ask in Montana?  My husband and I lived in Spokane, Washington for several years and loved to hike, backpack, and rent forest service cabins in northern Idaho and western Montana (loved Missoula area!).  We lived in several places in Washington state over the course of 6 years and though we moved back to Ohio in 2004, we still miss the northwest.

Moving back home after being away gave us fresh eyes for the place we grew up and although Ohio is not as wild as we would like, there are some good places to get outdoors.  Akron is close to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and there are some good state parks around.

Good to hear from you!!

Hello Susan,

I live in Montana, but my entire family is back in Ohio (Akron area). We're heading back at the end of October, and I'd like to find places to get out just to save my sanity. Unfortunately, I've been away so long (21 years) that I forget a lot of the area. Hopefully, I can get some of my family to join in the discussion, too!
